Ginseng rootlets from Emerald Castle Farms are an ideal way to get started growing ginseng. Rootlets are available in lower quantities and in varying age groups. The older the root the more robust and resilient it will likely be, and the better your chances for success. This is the reason older rootlets are often in higher demand for small personal production or woodland flower beds.
Our SELECT ginseng roots are grown in raised beds where they can be maintained better than they could be in the woods. Typically, the SELECT roots are larger than their woods grown counterparts, but still shy of the size and obvious characteristics of commercial farm raised rootlets. In my experience, SELECT roots properly transplanted into suitable ground will quickly take on a natural wild appearance and character -even in tilled beds as long as growth enhancers are not introduced.
I have had the best luck transplanting SELECT rootlets into the woods by using a long handle trowel commonly known as a trapper's trowel. I push the trowel into the ground at a very low angle creating a slice perhaps 6" long and 2" deep. I lift the soil gently so as not to create much disturbance, and then place the rootlet into the space being careful to lay the fine roots out flat. I then pull out the trowel and let the ground fall back covering the rootlet. The latest rootlets I transplanted this way are showing no signs of transplant shock and have more than doubled in size -some more than trippled!
This is a comparison of the 2 year old and 3 year old Select rootlets available for the 2018 fall planting season. Pictures were taken July 5th, on the same table at the same time. The size differences are accurate. Perhaps more importantly, the top growth of the plants show that many of the three year old plants are beginning to produce seed. This is a random sample of our available Select rootlets. They are grown very close together, but will do much better once they are transplanted and spread out a little.
