American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is one of the most highly prized medicinal herbs. While American ginseng is listed as a CITES II endangered species (thereby regulating harvest and export from each state where it grows), those regulations are primarily aimed at protecting wild ginseng –as opposed to cultivated ginseng. Eastern medicine and culture places a high value on wild ginseng roots over cultivated roots. However, the saponins called ginsenosides (i.e., active constituents) tend to increase levels with age, but are often higher in cultivated ginseng root.
Ginseng is commonly associated with a variety of positive health effects. Most well known are those associated with increased energy, stress inoculation, improved memory, and as an aphrodisiac. In recent years, research has increased dramatically for both Panax ginseng and American ginseng. Some of the health benefits can be found in this article by Yuan, Wang, Wicks, & Qi, (2010) Chemical and Pharmacological Studies of Saponins with a Focus on American Ginseng (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3043615/pdf/nihms-272468.pdf) This article appears in the Journal of Ginseng Research (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-ginseng-research/) which would be a great place to do some further research on your own.
The ginseng products we offer are 100% natural without any additives. The cultivated ginseng we offer, whether fresh whole roots, dry roots, root fiber, or powdered ginseng, originate from a reputable small family farm in Wisconsin. Occasionally, we may have fresh or dry woodsgrown and wild simulated root when those products are available.
